Becoming Unstuck in Just One Step

We've all felt "stuck" at some point in our lives or in our careers. More often than not, there is a concern or a fear about taking a risk that can put us on a new path towards achievement. One strategy to get us "unstuck" is to turn that concern or fear into a positive action statement and then establish a protocol for taking the first step towards that action in the very near term.

A new entrepreneur (we'll call her Jennifer) was experiencing strong growth in her first business and had an idea to expand it. She'd been cycling this idea through her head and found herself lying awake at night thinking about it, but not doing anything about it. This went on for some time. The idea filled her with both excitement and anxiety. She worried that it would take a lot of work and that it would be easier for her to stick to what she was already doing. As a result, she found she was making no progress.

Through coaching, Jennifer learned to turn her negative "I worry..." statement into a positive "I will..." statement. She declared, "I will write a summary business proposal for this new idea and map out the steps it would take to achieve success." Furthermore, once she found her "I will" statement, she established a protocol for accountability: she committed to sharing this business proposal with her coach within 72 hours of the declaration.

It's hard to overstate how powerful this action is for someone like Jennifer. Almost instantly, she becomes "unstuck," taking steps to sidestep her risk aversion by implementing the first steps of building the new business.
