Coaches bring diverse experience to their practices. Some come with experience in psychology, therapy or social work, and want to add coaching to their service offerings. Others have had long and successful careers in an industry and set up a coaching practice to engage with leaders and future leaders in that industry.
There's no right or wrong background for coaches. But there are right and wrong approaches to coaching. Expert coaches leave their own industry expertise out of the coaching experience. It may be helpful for them to understand the context of a client's agenda, but it is not an opportunity for them to consult for you by wearing the hat that they wore as leaders in industry.
My own experience on Wall Street provides me with a context for those clients who come from that arena, but at Oxbridge Executive Coaching we believe the expertise is in the coaching process, not in the industry or context in which clients find themselves.
